Minimally invasive TLIF — Transforaminal Lumbar Interbody Fusion

The lumbar (lower back) portion of the spine is particularly susceptible to spine conditions because the lumbar spine undergoes the most stress and general wear and tear of all the sections of the spine. In fact, most people by the age of 70 will have some form of lower back condition, such as spondylosis or spondylolisthesis, that results from the natural aging process of the spine. If you have a spine condition that causes you pain and discomfort in your lower back, you should consider treatment options to treat your condition at the source of the problem. Conservative methods of treatment are a good option for people with mild conditions, but these treatment methods only really treat the symptoms associated with your condition, such as pain and stiffness. Spine surgery reaches the core of your spine condition and can treat the condition itself to not only alleviate the current symptoms, but also to help prevent future occurrences of the condition. As you research the surgical options available to treat lumbar spine conditions, we encourage you to reach out to our care team at Laser Spine with any questions. Our goal is to help keep you informed so you can make the best treatment decision for your needs and your lifestyle.

Advantages of minimally invasive TLIF surgery over traditional open back fusion

Traditional open back fusion often comes with more risks and inconveniences than minimally invasive fusion surgery. It also does not yield as effective results as our minimally invasive surgery at Laser Spine. Traditional open back fusion is performed in a hospital setting, which requires you to have an extended postoperative stay in the hospital of two to five days, depending on the type of surgery performed. During the procedure, the surgeon will cut a large incision down the back, also cutting through muscles and soft tissues. This results in a longer recovery time and a large scar about 6 to 10 inches down your back. Additionally, the risk of infection and complication is high compared to the minimal risk associated with our minimally invasive fusion surgery and, specifically, our transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion surgery.

Overview of Transforaminal Lumbar Interbody Fusion (TLIF) surgery

When most patients are recommended for spine surgery, they think about traditional open back fusion surgery. Traditional open back fusion surgery tends to be a confusing and slightly scary thought for most people because this treatment is often associated with long hospital stays, extended recovery times and often less-than-desired postoperative results. Fortunately, traditional open back fusion is not your only option for surgical treatment for lumbar spine conditions. At Laser Spine, we saw a desperate need for a safer and effective alternative to traditional open back surgery. Our minimally invasive lumbar fusion surgery has less risk and better results than traditional open back fusion, and our patients experience shorter recovery times* after surgery. The most common minimally invasive fusion surgery we offer for lumbar spine conditions is our transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion surgery. Unlike traditional open back fusion that requires a large, roughly 6- to 10-inch incision in the back, our TLIF surgery is performed through a small 1-inch incision in the side. The spine is accessed without disrupting any surrounding muscles or tissues, to avoid prolonged recovery time and risk of infection. Once the spine is reached, the surgeon will remove the diseased portion of the lumbar spine, which is usually a deteriorated disc or joint, depending on the lumbar spine condition you have. Once the diseased component is removed, the surgeon will insert an implant to immediately stabilize the spine where the diseased disc or joint was previously located. This implant will help prevent future stabilization problems in that area of the spine.
